Regulated Research at Illinois

The Regulated Research Program at UIUC supports researchers working with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), ensuring compliance with evolving federal standards. With over $4.7 million in CUI-related expenditures and increasing federal scrutiny, the program helps align research practices with national security requirements such as CMMC.

Launched in 2023 through a partnership between Technology Services and NCSA, the program was created to strengthen the university’s compliance infrastructure. It provides guidance, tools, and secure environments—like Microsoft GCC High—for CUI research. As enforcement intensifies, the program is building better visibility and support mechanisms to ensure researchers remain eligible for federally funded projects.
