Announcing the Greg Gulick Honorary Research Award

In honor of Greg Gulick, the late Interim Chief Information Officer of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Amazon Web Services has given $100,000 in AWS credits for research projects focused on combating cancer or COVID-19.

Greg was a university leader, a colleague, husband, father, and a friend. He passed away of COVID-19 in February 2021, an illness he worked very hard to protect the university community from. His passing was a difficult blow for many, both personally and professionally. He was known as a fighter and had battled and beat back cancer previously. Those who knew him well, fully expected him to also beat COVID-19. Sadly, this was not the case.

As Interim CIO, Greg led Technology Services in supporting, growing, and improving the impressive IT infrastructure that serves as a foundation for our university operations and our academic and research missions. His empowering, compassionate, and inclusive leadership during this COVID-19 year was integral in ensuring remote work, teaching, learning, and research were not only viable but successful. As a leader, Greg encouraged his colleagues to explore new ideas and think freely about potential solutions to the technology challenges facing our university community, and building our cloud operations was at the forefront of these efforts. As Illinois brought access to commercial cloud services, research support was prioritized first - a move no other university has taken - and this has proven a great benefit to our institution.

Technology Services has worked with Amazon Web Services over the past three years to integrate additional cloud services into our infrastructure. We thank AWS for this gift and the opportunity to share it with our research community.
